CHAPTER 26

WINSLET

It had been three minutes, but it felt like three hundred. I couldn’t believe he was sneaking around the mansion. We had both seen the guards. We knew how much security was at the party. Why in the world was he acting so recklessly?

I knew why. His father.

His father’s life depended on him finding something that would lead us to him. The risk was worth it. I couldn’t say I would put my life on the line to save my dad, but he had a different relationship with him. I had to trust Jett knew what he was doing. He had military training and could handle himself.

If he got caught, then what? If we had to make a break for it, then so be it. I would have his back just like I knew he would always have mine. We would run for our lives. Unfortunately, if he got caught and Lin figured out I wasn’t who I said I was, it wasn’t just my life in danger. I was here to rescue Sarah. If I was run out of town, I couldn’t get to her. Jett was risking a lot more than just his life. I hoped he knew that.

“Drink?” one of the ladies in gold asked.

“Thank you,” I said, smiling, and took a glass.

She nodded once and walked away. I had a feeling she wasn’t fluent in English. While mingling, I had heard several languages being spoken. People had divided into groups.

I moved around the room and found a group speaking English. I decided to join them. At least, I tried. I attempted to chime in by offering a few words here and there. I got tight smiles and side eyes. They were not interested in what I had to say.

There were some very cold shoulders being turned my way.

I quietly moved on to a group standing in front of a small stage where a dancer was performing a sultry, seductive dance. She was mesmerizing. “Beautiful,” I said.

The man to my right looked over his shoulder with a smile which fell away the moment he laid eyes on me. His gaze turned hard with his lip curling in disgust. He turned back around, muttering something under his breath. The chill in the air was powerful. They did not like me. I was sticking out like a sore thumb.

I stepped away once again and searched the crowd for Jett. He had not returned yet. It had been too long. He should have been back by now. I was worried he had been discovered.

If he had, it wouldn’t be long before they came for me. I wasn’t going to run and leave him to fend for himself. Standing around and trying to fit in like a square peg in a round hole wasn’t accomplishing anything. Lin wasn’t back. My anxiety and concern were growing by the second. Something was off.

I couldn’t wait another minute. I had to find him. I inched my way to the hallway he had disappeared down.
